HE Senj

HEP's single largest conventional hydro plant by annual output -- high-pressure derivation combining the entire Lika and Gacka river systems, 7km south of Senj near Sveti Juraj. Water is collected from Kruscica reservoir (via HE Sklope), diverted from the Lika into the Gacka near Otocac, then carried ~41km (tunnels + canals + pressure pipeline) via the Gusic Polje compensation basin to the powerhouse, using a net head of ~437m down to the Adriatic. 3 Francis units, 72 MW each -- a world-record turbine head (>400m) when commissioned in 1965. Average annual production ~970 GWh (max 1,474 GWh in 2014) -- roughly 10% of all HEP generation and ~20% of HEP's hydro output. Rerouting the Gacka through the Gusic Polje basin also essentially eliminated flood risk on the old riverbed toward Donja Svica. Leading plant of GHE Senj (with HE Sklope), under Centar proizvodnje Zapad. Provides ancillary services (automatic secondary regulation, tertiary regulation, black start, island operation).
